The
Railways in India provide the principle mode of transportation for freight and
passengers. The Indian railway has been a great integration force during the
last more than 155 years. In 1853, when the first train steamed off from Mumbai
to Thane (distance of 34 kilometers), Indian railways have grown into a vast
network of 7,030 stations spread over a route length of 63,974 kilometers, with
a fleet of 8,593 locomotives, 51,030 passengers service vehicles, 6,505 other
coaching vehicles and 2,19,931 wagons as on 31st March 2010.
The gauge wise route and track length of the system as on 31st March:
Broad Gauge (1.676mm): Route - 54,257 Km, Running Track - 76,758 km, Total Track - 1,01,486 km
Meter Gauge (1.000mm): Route - 7,180 Km, Running Track – 7,792 km, Total Track – 9,290 km
Narrow Gauge (762 mm and 610 mm): Route – 2,537 Km, Running Track – 2,537 km, Total Track – 2,481 km
Total: Route – 63,974 km, Running Track – 87,087 km, Total Track 1,13,617 km
About 29% of the route kilometer, 41% of running
track kilometer and 45% of total track kilometer is electrified. The rolling
stock fleet of Indian railway in service as on 31st March 2010
comprised 42 steam, 5,022 diesel and 3,825 electric locomotives.
Passengers originating had raisen from 1,284 miilion
in 1950-51 to 7,246 million in 2009-10 and passenger kilometers from 66.52
billion in 1950-51 to 903 billion in 2009-10.
